Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced a "final call" for nationwide protests on November 24, urging people in Pakistan and abroad to stand against what he calls a "stolen mandate" and "authoritarian system." He criticized the recent passage of the 26th amendment, which he claims strengthens a dictatorial regime.
Since his arrest in August 2023 on multiple charges, Imran Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been organizing protests demanding his release and fair elections. Speaking to the media outside a court hearing related to a £190 million corruption case, Mr. Khan stressed that the November 24 demonstrations are crucial for Pakistan's future.
He encouraged citizens, including Pakistanis living abroad, to hold rallies and bring global attention to their cause. He described the current political situation as one of the darkest chapters in the country's history and warned of continuous protests if their demands are not met. These include reversing the 26th amendment, restoring PTI’s electoral rights, and releasing detained party members.
Court Proceedings
During the corruption case hearing, the accountability court postponed proceedings until November 24. The court is waiting for clarity from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on whether to address acquittal requests from Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, before proceeding further.
While Imran Khan's lawyer argued that the acquittal petitions should be decided first, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor opposed delays, insisting that criminal cases should move forward regardless of pending applications.
Punjab Government’s Stance on Protests
In response to Imran Khan’s announcement, the Punjab government has vowed to deal strictly with any disruptions caused by the protests. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari warned against using the guise of “peaceful protests” for any unlawful activities. She stated that anyone breaking the law or causing public inconvenience would face strict action.
Ms. Bokhari accused PTI of refusing to accept the country’s progress and claimed that their politics revolved around protests and demonstrations. She also criticized Imran Khan for involving Pakistan's youth in his political ambitions while his family lives comfortably abroad.
Highlighting recent government welfare and development initiatives led by Maryam Nawaz, Ms. Bokhari contrasted them with PTI’s approach, alleging corruption within Imran Khan’s circle.
PTI’s Response
Reacting to the Punjab minister’s comments, PTI Punjab Information Secretary Shaukat Basra accused the current government of coming to power with the backing of powerful institutions. He claimed the ruling party manipulated the system to gain control and dismissed their allegations against PTI as baseless.
Mr. Basra emphasized that PTI, under Imran Khan’s leadership, represents a higher standard of politics compared to the ruling party and vowed to continue their peaceful struggle for justice and democracy.
